Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR)

The Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR) is part of the California Department of Consumer Affairs. The BAR registers and regulates approximately 35,000 California automotive repair facilities and licenses smog check, lamp and brake inspection stations

If you have information that indicates that the insurance company did any of the following:

  • Required that consumer have his/her vehicle repaired at a specific shop
  • Required the consumer to travel an unreasonable distance either to inspect a replacement automobile, to conduct an inspection of the vehicle, to obtain a repair estimate or to have the automobile repaired at a specific shop
  • Failed to provide the claimant with the name of at least one repair shop, if requested by the claimant, that will make the repairs for the amount of a written estimate prepared by the insurer
  • Required the use of non-original equipment manufacturer replacement crash parts in the repair of an automobile without warranting that the parts are at least equal to the original equipment manufacturer parts in terms of kind, quality, safety, fit and performance
  • Failed to reasonably adjust any written estimates prepared by the repair shop of the insured's choice
  • Required the consumer to supply parts for replacement
